President Jerzy Buzek on the meeting with Vlad Filat, Prime-Minister of Moldova
Brussels -
15/09/2010
The President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek met today, 15 September with Vlad Filat, Prime Minister of Moldova, to discuss the status of EU-Moldova relations.
Following the meeting President Buzek said:
"The European dream of Moldovan citizens can be fulfilled only with hard work. Our relations are becoming more and more intensive.
The cards are in your hands. We will do our part and be by your side offering experience and openness to dialogue. Last week EP adopted 90 million Euro Micro financial assistance for Moldova.
Moldova is at a crucial crossroad. I regret that the constitutional referendum in Moldova failed because of a low turnout. Political leaders should stay united and continue necessary reforms: constitutional and political.
The EU is a clear supporter of the Moldovan reform agenda. It is not always popular, but necessary. Cross-party support is essential. Your future is a modern, stable, democratic and prosperous Moldova in the heart of Europe."

Note for editors:
Moldova is set to receive an EU grant of up to €90 million to help it through the financial crisis, following a vote of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The money will help Chisinau to finance its balance-of-payments deficit and meet its budgetary needs, and will supplement IMF, World Bank and other bilateral support already granted to Moldova. It will be made available in three or four installments: two in 2010 and one or two in 2011.
