EU to back Moldova to diversify energy resources

CHISINAU, 26 March. /MOLDPRES/. Prime Minister Vlad Filat today met EU Commissioner for Energy Gunter Oettinger and EU Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs Olli Rehn, the government's press service has said.

The prime minister thanked for the efforts made at the meeting of the Consultative Group - Partnership for Moldova Forum, held on 24 March. He said that Moldova highly appreciated the donors' openness.

Filat also said that the recent accession to the Energy Community Treaty is very important for Moldova.

"This step will contribute to diversifying energy resources, liberalizing the energy market in Moldova, will optimize the capacity of their stocking, will diminish their negative impact on the environment, as well as will facilitate the enforcement of the EU acquis in the energy field," the prime minister said.

Vlad Filat thanked the EU for supporting the development of Moldova's energy sector, including by delegating a mission to Moldova to assess evolutions in this branch.

The commissioner showed interest in the latest reforms implemented by the Moldovan government, stressing that the EU will continue backing Moldova, including in terms of diversifying the energy resources.

The prime minister spoke about Moldova's economic stabilization and restoration programme in 2009-12 and the measures undertaken n this direction already.

"In early 2010, we have already recorded a two-per-cent economic growth. It is not much, but the positive tendency is important," the prime minister specified.

Vlad Filat also referred to the successful launch of negotiations on an association agreement between Moldova and the European Union on 12 January 2010, as well as the launch of dialogue on the liberalization of the visa regime.

Commissioner Olli Rehn showed much interest in the economic and financial situation in Moldova and congratulated the prime minister for the agreement negotiated with the International Monetary Fund.

The commissioner said that the results achieved by Moldova after the implementation of the reforms launched by the new government are encouraging.

"I urge you to keep the same tempo, and to make more economic progress. We will support your efforts," the commissioner said.

Olli Rehn wished much success to the government's team, stressing that he is sure that Moldova will get much closer to the European Union under the leadership of Prime Minister Vlad Filat.
